Rossin Rovers Christmas Friendlies Update The first team took on Dynamo Drogheda in the Mitchell Cup on 27th of December and eventually emerged victories after the tie went to penalties. Damien O'Brien put Rossin 1-0 with a fine finish before the home side conceded a sloppy equaliser. The gaffer rallied the troops at half time and Rossin started the 2nd half the much better team. Damian O'Brien put Rossin back in front with a wonderful solo effort when he flew past 3 defenders before smashing the ball past the Dynamo keeper into the left hand corner. Dynamo showed tremendous spirit and put the Rossin defence under a lot of pressure for the final 10 minutes. They reaped the rewards when they won a free kick just outside the Rossin box. The Dynamo Drogheda striker stepped up and fired the free kick into the top right hand corner. After a small amount of extra time the tie went to penalties. Shane Coyle, Niall Crinion, Damian O'Brien and Alan Mcaleer (Yes Alan Mcaleer) all slotted home for Rossin while Fergus Smyth decapited a horse in Noone Transports yard with his effort. Dynamo missed 2 penalties with O'Brien proving the hero of the day saving their 4th to send the home fans (Paddy Welsh) into raptures. Man of the Match: Damian O'Brien Rossin's second friendly of the Christmas period saw them take on Slane Wanderers in the Wheatfield in Slane on Saturday the 31st of December. (Yes I know what your thinking, who in their right minds would want to play a game on New Year's Eve??) Rossin began this game very well and went in front after a quarter of an hour when Damian O'Brien's long range effort trickled under the Slane keepers arms and into the net. The Rossin defence continued to thwart Slane's attacking afforts and on 25 minutes Niall Taafe popped up with a wonderful long range effort sending the ball into the top right hand corner of the net giving the keeper now chance. With Rossin 2-0 up on the half hour Slane started to pile on the pressure. Just before half time a mistake in the Rossin defence allowed the Slane striker to cut in from the right and fire a shot past the Rossin Keeper making it 2-1 at half time. Rossin came out in the 2nd half and were immediately pegged bag by the home side. The Rossin defence were performing excellently with Dotts, Neil Smyth, Dermot Lynn, Alan Kirwan and Kevin Dunne putting their bodies on the line for the Rossin cause. Slane dominated much of the second half and kept Rossin to a few attacks on the break. The home side came close on numerous occasions in the final few minutes hitting bar and post but Rossin held firm to win this hard fought match against their neighbours. Man of the Match: Dermot Lynn
